Magnesium Keeps the Blood Vessels Happy

Magnesium belongs to the class of micro mineral and is essential life. It plays a major role in activating several enzymes. In addition to roles in enzyme-catalyzed reactions, magnesium has been shown to have other roles as well.

Magnesium Lowers Blood Pressure

Studies have shown that magnesium supplements can lower blood pressure. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressures are lowered. The maintenance of normal blood pressure depends on the health of the blood vessels. The blood vessels, particularly arteries should be flexible and elastic. This allows them to adjust to varying rates of cardiac output.

Arteriosclerosis

However, deposition of materials in the arterial walls makes the arteries to harden, thereby losing flexibility. This hardening of the arteries is known as arteriosclerosis. This can lead to decreased efficiency of blood flow, making the heart increase cardiac output. This may lead to increase in blood pressure. This increases the risk for heart disease, hypertension and stroke.

Calcification

One of the reasons for the hardening of the arteries is the deposition of calcium. This process is known as calcification. Magnesium supplements can reduce vascular calcification. When calcification is reduced, arteriosclerosis is also reduced. This promotes elasticity in the blood vessels.
