Assume one person is suffering from high blood pressure, another from high cholesterol levels, another is affected by obesity and another is on the verge of getting diabetes. Suppose that an individual is suffering from all these problems. It must be a nightmare. Yet, it is possible and this condition is known as metabolic syndrome. One of the characteristics of metabolic syndrome is insulin resistance and reduced glucose tolerance. Insulin resistance occurs when insulin present in the body is not able to function properly. Insulin resistance leads to type 2 diabetes. Vitamin D deficiency leads to insulin resistance and diabetes because this vitamin is able to increase the body sensitivity for insulin. This means that insulin performs better in the presence of adequate amounts of vitamin D.

Macrophages are immune cells which are attracted by inflammation. The macrophages are also capable of picking up cholesterol. Vitamin D regulates the entry of cholesterol into the macrophages. Thus, when vitamin D is lacking, macrophages pick up excess cholesterol and become foam cells. These foam cells tend to deposit in the arteries, beginning the process of atherosclerosis.
